The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) held a new member ceremony on October 23 and 24 themed “Driving Progress - Leading Change” in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

The ceremony marked a special moment as the ACCA celebrates its 120th anniversary, leading the accounting profession towards a brighter future where accountants uphold the highest ethical standards and excel in this year's prominent areas like data assurance, sustainability reporting, and technology.

Ayla Majid, FCCA and ACCA global deputy president, extended heartfelt congratulations to the new ACCA members and acknowledged their dedication and hard work in achieving membership with the world’s largest professional accounting body.

"Tonight, you are joining not just a professional association but a powerful global community of over 252,250 members and 526,000 students across 181 countries. Many people often ask what makes the ACCA unique. The answer is simple, in three words: purpose, people, and professionalism."

This year, the ACCA continues to focus on accounting for a better world initiative, emphasising AI, talent development, and sustainability.

In the realm of AI, the ACCA is at the forefront of discussions on AI’s advancement and its implications for the accounting profession. The ACCA emphasises addressing the opportunities, challenges, and risks associated with AI, examining its impact on accountants' roles, professional ethics, and how it can serve as a positive tool within the field.

When it comes to talent development, the ACCA delves into issues surrounding the nurturing of current and future talent, exploring what this means for employers and the global accounting landscape. It highlights exciting career opportunities, including flexibility and region, and sector-specific skill gaps, while pursuing both long- and short-term solutions focused on equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Regarding sustainability, the ACCA continues to assert its leadership in fostering a profession with sustainability at its core. The ACCA underscores the essential role of accountants in tackling climate change and supporting the transition to a more sustainable world, pledging to leverage its influence and vast network to promote the adoption of international sustainability standards.

“In this regard, I would like to introduce the ACCA’s groundbreaking new professional certificate in sustainability, launched last month. This world-leading certification equips accountants with essential knowledge and skills to become specialists and leaders in sustainability, including sustainable reporting, assurance, ethics, and strategy,” added Majid.

Vu Duc Chinh, head of the Accounting and Auditing Supervisory Department at the Ministry of Finance (MoF), also celebrated and congratulated the ACCA’s new members, emphasising its role in enhancing the quality of the accounting and auditing workforce in Vietnam.

“This year, the ACCA welcomes 116 new members, bringing the total number of ACCA members in Vietnam to over 1,300. This achievement results from a long-standing partnership between the ACCA and the MoF over the past 21 years. This collaboration has increased awareness of the importance of professional accountants, contributing to a more transparent business environment and fostering sustainable economic growth in Vietnam,” said Chinh.

As one of the United Kingdom’s oldest industry associations, the ACCA has received significant attention from both the British and Vietnamese governments. In his welcoming remarks at the ceremony, Marcus Winsley, Deputy Ambassador of the British Embassy in Hanoi, highlighted that ACCA’s theme this year perfectly reflects the remarkable journey members are embarking on.

“ACCA certification not only showcases your efforts and dedication but also equips you with essential skills to thrive in the dynamic and ever-evolving world of finance and accounting. These specialised skills and the ‘Made in the UK’ certification hold tremendous value for aspiring professionals worldwide. They provide you with a passport to enhance your career prospects and make meaningful impacts on the broader economy. Whether driving growth within your companies or leading change in your communities, you are part of a global movement towards excellence and innovation.”
