Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung asked the National Assembly to consider the Government’s request to formally cut the country’s GDP growth rate target of this year from 8.5 percent to 7 percent. He also proposed several solutions to contain inflation and ensure social welfare.

Several National Assembly delegates disagreed with the government’s planned growth rate for the gross domestic product (GDP) - 8 per cent for 2006 - and said that a higher level would help Vietnam catch up with developed countries.
