The competition seeks to encourage students to find joy in learning English, thereby becoming more confident in mastering English in daily conversation.
English fluency would enable young Vietnamese to tap global knowledge, learning the cultures of the world to keep their minds sharp and continuously build their knowledge base.
Total prizes for the contest are valued at VND400 million ($19,000) and are sponsored by British University Vietnam.
The first prize is a year scholarship to study at Staffordshire University’s bachelor programme at British University Vietnam, valued at VND200 million ($9,500). The two second prizes are scholarships to the Foundations programme at the local university, valued at VND70 million ($3,300) each.
“For Vietnamese students, English is not only a valuable academic subject at the high school level, but also an essential skill for future success. The organiser of the contest would like young Vietnamese to think and create in English. Through the contest, Vietnamese students will have the opportunity to study contemporary socio-economic topics and discuss and present their point of view on that topic to ignite and encourage their critical thinking abilities and English speaking skills,” said deputy editor in chief of Dantri e-news Pham Tuan Anh.
Dean of British University Vietnam Christopher Jeffery said, “Our teaching philosophy is to make sure subjects are delivered in the best way to be the most beneficial to students, learning and application. I believe the format of this contest, which utilises modern elements of learning through the internet and video making, will motivate more students and attract high school students.”
The competition has three rounds. The first will be comprehensive reading test, the second will be presentation skills on video and the final round will be a presentation that includes a debate with judges.
