According to 2023-2024 statistics from the Ministry of Education and Training (MoET), 243 higher education institutions with approximately 2.3 million students have only partially met the demand for qualified staff.
At the forum on May 22 between FIEs and higher education institutions, under the ‘Australia-Vietnam Human Resource Development Programme’, Deputy Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Van Phuc said, "Although certain achievements have been made, Vietnamese higher education institutions must strive further in research and training to promptly and fully meet the socioeconomic development requirements of the country, especially in training high-quality human resources for the labour market.”

In addition to existing foreign-led projects, over 3,000 new projects were licensed in 2023, creating significant demand for labour, particularly in sectors requiring high-quality human resources.
"Therefore, FIEs need to link up and cooperate with higher education institutions in Vietnam to find human resources, commission these institutions for training, and view this as both a challenge and an opportunity for development," Phuc added.
Promoting research and training collaboration between FIEs and higher education institutions is an opportunity for parties to connect, cooperate, and share knowledge and experience.
Higher education institutions have the chance to apply their research in practice, improving training quality and developing high-quality human resources. Enterprises can leverage the research and innovations from universities to enhance their competitiveness and innovation, and access high-quality human resources.

"Like all development activities, university-business cooperation requires commitment at all levels within the institution and long-term investment in time and financial resources," stated Greg McMillan, higher education consultant for Aus4Skills, at the forum.
On the occasion, six MoUs for cooperation between higher education institutions and FIEs in research and training were signed, including agreements between the University of Mining and Geology and BLACKSTONE (Australia), the University of Mining and Geology and MINCORE (Australia), Hung Yen University of Technology and Education and COGNEX Vietnam, Hung Yen University of Technology and Education and ABB Vietnam; University of Civil Engineering and Life Design Kabaya (Japan), and the University of Civil Engineering and Green Air Conditioning Vietnam (China).
