The outlook of Quang Ngai urban area
By 2030, Quang Ngai city will have its infrastructure upgraded

Like other localities on the central coast, Quang Ngai has the great advantage of the sea, and it can choose the direction of its coastal development, satellite towns, and industrial and ecological urban areas.

There are currently 13 urban areas meeting various criteria, including one urban area meeting grade II urban standards in Quang Ngai city.

The city system of Quang Ngai develops along the North-South axis, in which the driving force is concentrated in the central area of the province.

Currently, the structure and nature of city areas in Quang Ngai are stable. In addition to the city, which is the capital of the province, Chau O-Van Tuong serves as the northern centre of the province, and Duc Pho town is the southern centre.

The mountainous area has Di Lang town plays the role of the western centre as well as the centre of Son Ha district. Finally, Ly Son island district is the gateway to the East Sea.

Notably, due to topographical characteristics and geographical location, most city areas are located on convenient transport axes that are strategic for socioeconomic development, national defence and security.

The current urbanisation rate of the province is 37 per cent. This is modest compared to other localities in the region. However, the development speed of Quang Ngai has also begun to pick up in the last 10 years.

“In the previous decade, Dung Quat Economic Zone (EZ) emerged as one of the bright spots in terms of economic growth, which contributed to forming the shape of industrial-service areas with modern, large-scale infrastructure,” said Tran Van Man, director of Quang Ngai Department of Construction.

Quang Ngai has a border with Chu Lai Open EZ (Quang Nam) and extends to Hoai Nhon (Binh Dinh). These two poles are experiencing strong industrial and urban development. In addition, the province is investing in a coastal road extending from Dung Quat EZ to the border with Binh Dinh, creating a coastal corridor.

According to the plan, before 2025 the province will prioritise the development of the provincial centre, the district centre, and dynamic urban areas associated with important economic areas.

In 2026-2030, Quang Ngai city will have its infrastructure upgraded and meet several class I urban criteria. At the same time, existing areas such as Binh Son town and Duc Pho town will also continue to be upgraded, aiming to upgrade smart and green urban areas, while adapting to climate change and gradually shaping typical town areas in the central region.

By 2030, the province will have 18 large towns, including one urban area that meets some basic criteria for a Grade 1 urban area, Quang Ngai city. There will also be two urban areas that meet some basic criteria for Grade 3 (Binh Son town and Duc Pho town), and one Grade 4 urban area in Ly Son district.

Quang Ngai city is a central hub, the political-economic and cultural-scientific centre of the province. It is a riverside urban area facing the sea, and one of the urban areas with development potential in the coastal urban strip of central Vietnam.

Binh Son town is an industrial-commercial, service-tourism urban area, the northern gateway urban area of the province. Duc Pho town is an ecological area, the administrative-political, economic, cultural, and social centre of the southern region, and a traffic hub connecting with the Central Highlands provinces. The remaining areas serve as political, administrative, economic, cultural, and commercial centres at the district level.

Chairman of Quang Ngai People’s Committee Dang Van Minh said that the goal of the urban planning system was to be consistent with the socioeconomic plan of each locality. In particular, urban areas will become the driving force for the region and district. There will also be a sharp focus on developing green areas and infrastructure.

“To implement policies on town and city space development, Quang Ngai will prioritise resources from the budget to invest in infrastructure and functional areas to create dynamic urban areas, including transport axes connecting, creating conditions to engage investment in socioeconomic development,” Minh said.

Furthermore, the province is promoting investment to build industrial infrastructure in the direction of sustainability; improving management capacity, and creating dynamic urban areas according to planning, Minh added.
