New Energy Nexus (NEX), in partnership with Saigon Hi-Tech Park Incubation Centre (SHTP-IC) and with support from GIZ, will organise the first Vietnam Smart Energy Hackathon in Ho Chi Minh City on May 31-June 2, 2019 to accelerate the development of innovative software solutions to tackle energy challenges.

Developers, data scientists, and energy industry executives are all welcome to join the two-day competition with VND100 million ($4,350) in prize offerings. Hackathons are creative sprint-like events allowing to identify new solutions to problems while providing a platform for teams to form – and potentially take ideas further into new ventures afterward.

The term “smart energy” refers to the intelligent integration of renewable energy sources for low/no-carbon generation (solar, wind, sustainable biomass, hydropower etc), efficient distribution and transmission (smart and cross-border grids, energy markets, infrastructure, etc.) and efficient and optimal consumption (demand-side management, storage, smart metering, prosumers, etc.) forming the future energy ecosystem.

The Smart Energy Hackathon provides startups a path to develop localised software solutions that span the entire energy value chain, including Internet of Things (IoT), electric vehicle (EV) charging management, smart grid, energy management, on-demand customer service, and more. The digitisation of the energy industry in Vietnam will allow greater flexibility for utilities to manage the integration of renewable energy sources, grid protection, smart asset management, and provide better customer service.
