Microsoft's idea is that the new interface will help users to focus on their tasks instead of being distracted by cumbersome decorative things.
The startup screen: Each application will support a startup screen with its own color-code - Blue for Word, Green for Excel and Orange for PowerPoint. Similar to the boot screen of other applications, Word's screen displays the recently opened documents. While creating empty document is the default option, users can change the template selection, looking for templates online or click Open Other Documents to search for documents on local drive or SkyDrive folders. The screens help new users to easily find everything they need, and experienced users to have all the options in one place. Right-click on the image and select Format Picture to open the Format Picture task - A pop-up window shows available editing options. You can leave the box open while working to avoid cluttering your workspace.

(To use Flickr, Office first needs to be connected to it.)
