Supporting coconut farmers
Ben Tre has witnessed an increase in the coconut growing areas as well as in the production in recent years following the implementation of regional coconut industry development programme to 2020 which saw a close cooperation between the enterprises and farmers through the association and consumption model.
This aims to help farmers sell coconuts at reasonable prices and ensure stable material sources for manufacturers targeting sustainable development.
The above cooperation model helps stabilise Ben Tre’s coconut material growing areas and create jobs for regional labourers.
The province is now home to 67,000ha of coconut areas compared to 51,600ha only in 2010. Coconut output has also risen significantly in the past five years, from 7,000 – 8,000 fruits per ha per year initially to 12,000 fruits per ha per year by the end of 2014.
In light of the state policy promoting linkages between production, consumption and planning in large fields, Ben Tre management authorities and coconut producers have synchronously deployed sustainable and harmonious connection programmes.
As a pioneer in accompanying with regional farmers, Ben Tre Import Export Joint Stock Company (Betrimex) has developed stable relations with coconut growers, helping the farmers to stabilise production through enjoying favourable pricing factor.
Setting new direction for Ben Tre coconuts
Along with increasing output, the coconut production sector has been growing constantly in recent years, providing new products to both export and domestic markets, and contributing to enhancing coconut production value chain.
Nowadays, the provincial coconut processing plants put focus on innovating technology, enlarging domestic and foreign markets, and expanding material growing areas in order to supply the market with new quality products with high added value and satisfy increasing market requirements.
Betrimex’s coconut products have been exported to more than 40 countries worldwide with export value touching $35 million. This proves the company is strongly positioned to enable Ben Tre coconut products to reach international level and make inroads into most hard-to-pleased markets.
According to Dang Huynh Uc My, Betrimex chairwoman, the company will further invest in modern technologies to meet the demand from high demanding markets and closely follow an optimal production model to elevate Ben Tre’s coconut production sector to match the orientation of “Increasing the value of Vietnamese agricultural products”.
In recent years, in addition to traditional products such as desiccated coconut, coconut shell charcoal, coconut oil, coconut fibre, coconut nets, the company has invested more than $20 billion into building a coconut milk factory on the largest scale in Vietnam for exporting canned coconut products to many countries in Europe, America and Africa, etc.
There has been an uptrend in the consumption of coconut products, proving the big export potential of Vietnamese coconuts and coconut products.
To strengthen their position in the domestic and international market, local enterprises are ramping up efforts for product diversification and quality improvement, in parallel to market extension and technology investment, laying the groundwork for a sustainable development.
