Viettel said this was the only mobile network with nationwide 3G coverage under a 3G-only infrastructure network. Up to the launch Bitell has installed and broadcast 3G to reach nearly 80 per cent of Peru’s total population.
Thanks to it extensive coverage and distribution channels across the country, Bitel signed more than 200,000 mobile subscribers before the official opening.
At the opening ceremony, Bitel’s CEO Hoang Quoc Quyen said, “The company’s goal is to provide high-speed mobile internet to all the people of Peru, contributing to a change in the lifestyle and work style of the people here.”
With successful telecommunications services at home, up to now Viettel has officially provided services to even countries including Laos, Cambodia, Haiti, Mozambique, East Timor, Peru and Cameroon. Two other markets, Tanzania and Burundi, have been licensed and are in the process of infrastructure development.
Peru is the first foreign market Viettel has entered. Thus, the opening of a mobile network there represents a new step forward in Viettel’s globalisation plan.
Peru’s population is estimated at more than 30.8 million people with the number of mobile subscribers at 15.2 million (as of the end of 2013). Currently about one quarter of Peru’s population do not have cell phones, while those with cell phones primarily live in urban areas.
