Chinese side's annoucement of fishing ban in the East Sea violates Viet Nam's sovereignty over the Hoang Sa archipelago and sovereign rights and jurisdiction over Viet Nam's waters, said Spokesperson Le Hai Binh of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Mr. Binh made the statement after the municipal administration of Haikou in Hainan, China's southernmost province has recently issued an announcement of fishing ban in the East Sea over the next two-and-a-half months.

Viet Nam resolutely protests against the ban, stated the Spokesperson, calling it null and void.

He affirmed that Viet Nam has sufficient legal grounds and historical evidence to prove its sovereignty over the Hoang Sa archipelago and sovereign rights and jurisdiction over its exclusive economic zone and continental shelf as enshrined in the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
