Cai Mep port welcomes one of world’s biggest container ships

The CMA CGM Laperouse, France’s biggest container ship, docked at Cai Mep International Terminal (CMIT) in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau on December 19.

The 13,830-TEU ship is the biggest of its kind so far to call at a seaport in Vietnam.

Earlier this year, a 11,400-TEU ship from CMA CGM Colombia, one of the world’s largest cargo vessels, also anchored at CMIT in March.

The successful docking of CMA CGM Laperouse at CMIT indicates the great potential of Vietnam’s maritime sector and its capacity to receive huge ships.

General Director of CMA CGM Vietnam, Jean Charles Tassoni, said that big container ships, up to 14,000 TEUs, will become the main cargo vessels on the Asia-Europe sea route in the near future. From March 2012, many giant ships will dock at Cai Mep International Terminal before leaving for Britain, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium, he added.

According to CMIT Deputy General Director Nguyen Xuan Ky, CMIT is one of few terminals in Asia that is able to cater for the world’s largest ships. Early next year, CMIT will install the fifth shipment of Super Post-Panamax Ship-To-Shore (STS) cranes to upgrade to an international level port, he said.
