Last year the South
East Asian Youth Chamber
Orchestra (SEAYCO) was
founded as part of a mu-
tual initiative between the
Goethe-Institut Southeast
Asia and the prestigious
Mahidol College of Music
in Salaya (Thailand).
This year, following
a rehearsal period in Sa-
laya, the orchestra will
give a concert in Hanoi.
The young musicians have
compiled a program rich in
variety, ranging from ba-
roque to pop.

In celebration of the
Japan - Vietnam Friendship
Year 2013, the Japan Foun-
dation Center Vietnam and
Consulate-General of Japan
in Ho Chi Minh City, in co-
operation with the Embas-
sy of Japan in Vietnam, are
organizing a contemporary
art exhibition. The Winter
Garden show is curated by
art critic Midori Matsui and
features 35 works, includ-
ing drawings, paintings,
and videos by 14 young
Japanese artists.
From June 8 to 23 @

Seasons pass by
The Sofitel Plaza Hanoi
is showcasing the work of
two famous photographic
artists - Hoang Manh Cuong
and Nguyen Xuan Chinh
– this month. Their joint
show, Seasons Pass By/
Mua Qua Pho
, is inspired
by the beauty of Vietnam-
ese women and French el-
egance. The pair have each
selected 25 images, with
themes including young la-
dies in white ao dai and
French colonial architecture
in the capital.

Yayoi Kusama, a key fig-
ure in Japan’s avant-garde
movement, is currently hold-
ing an exhibition of works at
the Japan Foundation Cen-
tre for Cultural Exchange
in Hanoi. The exhibition,
named Obsessions, compris-
es four key installations. The
Narcissus Garden piece fills
half of the central courtyard
with 1,500 silver balls, while
in the other half huge ob-
jects covered in polka dots
are arranged in a display de-
scribed as a ‘Guidepost to
the New Space’.

Following the success
of preceding festivals, the
fifth European-Vietnamese
Documentary Film Festival
is to take place in June.
Besides this year’s focus on
Belgian films, seven other
European countries (Ger-
many, Sweden, France,
Poland, Spain, Switzerland
and UK) will present films
in association with the Na-
tional Documentary and
Scientific Film Studio of
Vietnam.
