Construction of the four new classrooms, two teachers’ lounges and latrines was financed through a contribution of $100,000 from Boeing Company and the local community, and implemented by EMW with local partners.
Representatives from Phu Tho Provincial Study Promotion Association and the Thuy Van Commune People’s Committee also participated in the handover. Nearly 400 students and teachers will be using the new facilities this school year.
Kevin Heise, sales director for the Asia Pacific region for Boeing Company, emphasized the aim of the company’s contributions: “We believe that education is the key for all children to expand their thinking and realize their dreams. We are committed to the development of children’s education here in Vietnam, a country that holds so much promise for growth and achievement.”
This school construction project was implemented as part of a plan to expand and renovate the Phu Thinh Kindergarten, the main branch of the Thuy Van Kindergarten system in Thuy Van commune in order to meet the standards set by the Ministry of Education. The local community also built six new classrooms for the Phu Thinh branch in 2011.
Four new classrooms, teachers’ lounges and latrines have replaced dilapidated, unsafe classrooms, which had crumbling walls and warped support beams. The construction was carried out using green design and building techniques including high ceilings, ventilation vents, and low energy fans and lights, to reduce heat transfer, aid air circulation and improve energy efficiency.
Since 2005, the Boeing Company has financed the construction of thirteen primary schools and kindergartens in Vietnam with East Meets West. The kindergarten in Phu Thinh hamlet of Thuy Van commune is the third of four schools that Boeing has committed to build with EMW from 2011-2012.
